Choose El Calafate, El Chaltén or time for both

Los Glaciares National Park protects a large Patagonian landscape of ice, lakes, forests and mountains in Argentina’s Santa Cruz province. Decide first which sector you want to visit. El Calafate is the usual base for Perito Moreno Glacier; El Chaltén is the base for the northern mountain-walking area.

These are different bases with a journey between them. Do not treat a glacier boardwalk and a long mountain hike as consecutive short stops from the same hotel. Allocate time to the transfer and choose accommodation according to the days you actually plan.

A visit to the glacier’s viewing walkways is different from a boat excursion or an organized ice activity. Compare the viewpoint route, transport and time available before deciding whether to add another experience. The glacier and its lake setting can be appreciated without buying every optional activity.

Ask whether the quoted excursion includes park admission, the journey from your hotel and the specific activity named. Select an El Chaltén walk for your ability and conditions

The northern sector offers routes of different lengths and difficulties. Choose using the official route information, current conditions and the slowest person’s comfortable pace. A famous destination name is not a reason to attempt a long route when wind, ice or limited daylight changes its demands.

Consult the visitor centre before remote trekking or climbing and complete any required registration. The park’s guidance distinguishes normal marked routes from remote mountain activity and emphasizes current conditions. Do not infer today’s trail status from an old search result with a recent crawl date.
