For a first week without a car, start with central Funchal. Walk to meals and city sights. Book transport for the harder island journeys. Choose Calheta if beach and hotel time matter most. Choose a northern base if you plan several days on the north coast.

Mark your three main activities on a map before booking. For each, note the start point and how you will get back. Check public transport and tour pickup areas. A town that looks close on the map may still need a difficult road journey.

Funchal: center for city days, Lido for resort time

Start with central Funchal if you want meals and city sights on foot. Compare the centre and old town with your tour meeting point. A hillside property may have a Funchal address but still need a bus or taxi each day.

Castanheiro is one central option. Its official site places it in the historic centre and lists a panoramic lap pool. Check the room type. Standard rooms and suites have different capacities and facilities.

For hotel time, compare the Lido. Porto Mare lists gardens, pools and children's facilities. The Cliff Bay lists direct sea access and an indoor/outdoor pool. Add the journey to any central tour meeting point. These stays do not have the same address as a historic-centre hotel.

Savoy Palace is another luxury option in Funchal, with pools and a spa. Some spa and premium facilities have separate access rules. Check the room and the facilities you will use. A star rating does not tell you what your rate includes.

Calheta and Ponta do Sol: a slower coastal stay

For resort time, compare Saccharum. It lists outdoor pools and a heated indoor pool with age and access rules. Socalco offers houses and rooms, a freshwater pool and a food-and-farming concept. Choose the type of stay you want before comparing rates.

Ponta do Sol is another small coastal base. Check the exact village address and nearby dinner options. Ask about hills, parking and bags. A hillside apartment may suit a driver but add effort if you plan to walk.

A car helps with independent stops from either base. Without one, ask for quotes for your airport and trail journeys. Confirm local tour pickup too. Do not assume a Funchal departure collects in the southwest. Neither town guarantees sunshine.

Porto Moniz and São Vicente: stay for the north coast

São Vicente is another northern base. Compare the entrance with the places you plan to visit. Check local meals and evening returns, especially without a car. A scenic room photo does not answer those questions.

Choose a trail before choosing a hiking base. Rabaçal, Ribeiro Frio, Queimadas, Areeiro and São Lourenço are in different parts of the island. Staying north may suit a northern route. It can add journeys if you plan many Funchal days.

Machico, Santa Cruz and Santana: choose the exact eastern plan

Compare Machico and Santa Cruz if eastern sights or flight times shape your trip. Being close to the airport does not guarantee a useful late-night bus. Check the service, operating day and luggage rules for your flight.

For PR8 at São Lourenço, the start is Baía d'Abra. Check that the bus reaches this stop, not just a nearby town. Compare the full trip out and back for your date before choosing an eastern base.

Santana suits a northeast-focused stay. Caldeirão Verde starts at Queimadas. A bus to Santana still leaves a last leg to the trail. Plan that trip and its return before booking a room because it looks close.

Choose by budget without guessing nightly prices

For a tight budget, compare a central room or apartment with a cheaper stay farther away. Use the same dates and cancellation terms. Add airport trips, trail transport, parking and meals not included in the rate.

For a family, use the children's actual ages and the beds you need. A self-catering apartment and a resort meal plan serve different needs. Porto Mare is one researched family option. Check the room capacity and current children's facilities.

For a hotel-focused break, check what the rate includes. Spa access, premium pools and views may cost extra or depend on the room. We do not quote nightly prices. Search for your own dates and group.
