Before booking: the no-car plan

Base yourself in central Funchal, walk on city days and book transport for the west and east coast. Keep Day 7 free for a weather change. This flexible plan also scales down to three or five full days.

Use the current SIGA route directory for town journeys and check both directions for your operating day. SIGA has renumbered routes, so an old blog number may not match the current service. Days 1–2: arrive, settle in and explore Funchal

Use Day 1 for the airport transfer, check-in and a short walk near your stay. Match the transfer to your flight time and luggage; late arrivals can leave sightseeing until morning.

On Day 2, walk between Sé, the central waterfront and Rua de Santa Maria in Zona Velha, with lunch in the old town. These central streets are described in the official Funchal visitor guide. (Visit Madeira: Central Funchal and old-town streets)

Treat Monte as a separate uphill outing. Cable-car travel, a garden visit and a toboggan ride are separate purchases; arrange your return to the city before adding them.

Day 3: one west-focused excursion

The fishing village waterfront at Camara de Lobos Madeira with small traditional boats and steep green hills.

For one west-coast excursion, request Câmara de Lobos, the Cabo Girão viewpoint and Porto Moniz. The official visitor pages describe the fishing bay, glass platform and natural pools; they do not establish that a particular tour includes all three. Compare pickup at your actual address, total excursion time, lunch and admission charges, and time at Porto Moniz. Pool access depends on conditions. For a shorter day, choose Câmara de Lobos alone instead of trying to connect all three by bus.

Day 4: a walk matched to your ability

Choose one walking plan after checking IFCN route status and access requirements. PR 11 Vereda dos Balcões starts at Ribeiro Frio on ER 103: 1.5 km each way, 3 km return, with an official estimate of 1 hour 30 minutes. The tourism board rates it easy and publishes €4.50 admission for visitors over 12; visitors aged 12 or under are exempt. Arrange a return transfer to Ribeiro Frio separately. For a different mountain day, the HF service runs directly from Funchal’s Cable Car-Terminus stop (4A) to the Pico do Areeiro radar roundabout in 45 minutes. Published departures are 06:00 and 13:30; return departures are 12:15 and 19:00 in the summer timetable, with the last return moving to 18:00 from 25 October 2026. HF accepts telephone seat reservations seven to two working days ahead; reserved passengers must arrive at least 15 minutes before departure. Weather or a blocked road can cancel service. This bus returns from Areeiro, so do not use it as the assumed return for a one-way PR1 hike ending elsewhere. Balcões and Areeiro are alternative Day 4 plans. Day 5: a boat trip and a lighter afternoon

VMT’s published whale-watching trip lasts 3 hours and costs €40 per adult. Its terms say check-in closes 30 minutes before departure, so arrive earlier. Allow at least 3½ hours around the scheduled sailing, plus your journey to and from the marina. Book before your last full day and keep the afternoon in Funchal. If VMT cancels for weather or safety and you cannot rebook, its terms provide a refund. Compare Madeira boat types and departure choices

Days 6–7: an east-focused day and a real buffer

For Day 6, choose a booked east-coast route including Santana’s traditional houses and Machico’s historic centre. Machico alone makes a simpler town day: use SIGA’s current route directory to choose an outbound and return service, then walk in the historic centre and along the waterfront. Add Santana only with confirmed transport between the two. (SIGA: Current bus routes and timetables)

Keep Day 7 for a moved activity or more time in Funchal. On a flight day, stay within reach of your bags and airport transfer rather than adding a distant excursion.

A 3-day or 5-day Madeira trip without a car

For three full days, keep the Funchal day and choose one west or east tour. Use the third day for a walk, boat trip or local time. Pick your main goal instead of trying to fit all three. Count arrival days only if your flight leaves useful time.

For five full days, keep Funchal, one island tour, one walk, an ocean or local day, and a spare day. Drop the second long sightseeing tour first. This leaves room to move a trip when the weather changes.

What to do if a trail or boat day is cancelled

Casa Museu Frederico de Freitas offers an indoor alternative for art and decorative collections in Funchal. Match its opening day to your visit. In suitable weather, an optional city day could include Monte Palace, botanical gardens or Blandy’s Wine Lodge. Choose one with time for the return journey. For a day trip from Funchal, Madeira, a jeep tour can replace the planned coach or private excursion; changing vehicles is not a reason to add another full sightseeing day.

Move a cancelled activity to Day 7 only when the provider has space and the weather and your flight allow it.

Budget for the journeys, not just the room

A dated example for two adults: one VMT boat trip at €40 each totals €80; two HF Areeiro return journeys at €6 each add €12, for €92 across those two outings. This excludes accommodation, airport transfers, meals, trail admission and the west/east excursions. Balcões admission is a separate €4.50 per visitor over 12 if you choose that walk instead. Compare excursion quotes for the same route and dates, distinguishing per-person fares from a whole-group price. Save meeting points and contacts offline. If tours and driving both appeal little, reduce distant stops rather than trying to copy a rental-car route by bus.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see Madeira without renting a car?

Yes, with a trip designed around walking, current bus services and selected booked transport. It is less suitable for a spontaneous itinerary with several remote trailheads every day.

Is this itinerary entirely by public bus?

No. It deliberately uses booked transport for the more complex island and trail days. A bus-only version needs separate, date-specific timetable checks.

Should I book all seven days in advance?

Secure the activities that matter most, but retain flexibility. Check cancellation terms and leave a buffer rather than filling every day with a fixed departure.
