Keep well clear of departing aircraft

Jet blast is a serious hazard. The US Department of State advises visitors not to attempt to experience the blast from arriving or departing aircraft at Maho. Follow warning signs and instructions, stay out of restricted areas, and never hold on to the airport fence during a departure.

A busy crowd is not evidence that a position is safe. Keep children beside you and choose a place that leaves an easy route away from the runway-end area. Secure loose belongings before watching a plane, and do not step into the road while framing a photograph. If you cannot find a comfortable viewing position away from hazards, watch from elsewhere or leave.

Use flight information without making a promise

Look at current airport arrivals when deciding when to visit. Timetables can change, and a scheduled aircraft type or landing time is not a guarantee. The tourism page also provides a webcam, useful for getting a sense of the setting before committing to an outing.

Leave room for waiting, water and a break from the noise. A short visit with several ordinary arrivals may be more satisfying than standing in the sun for one delayed flight. If you have a must-see aircraft in mind, keep the rest of the afternoon flexible. Airline operations take priority over sightseeing, and there is no reliable way to buy a particular low approach.

If photographing arrivals, choose your viewing position before the aircraft approaches and keep your feet still while taking the picture. A wide view that includes the sea can be more useful than moving into a crowded spot.

Protect your airport or cruise return

When arriving from a cruise terminal, compare independent transport with an excursion that explicitly includes Maho. Ask about time at the beach, other stops, pickup location and the return deadline. Confirm whether the schedule uses ship time or local time. Keep a generous margin for traffic and do not make the last possible departure your plan.

An airport layover needs a separate calculation: immigration, baggage, security and the airline’s check-in cutoff all matter. The beach’s proximity to the runway does not mean a short connection is enough. If you are already staying on the island, arrange a clear return pickup rather than relying on finding a vehicle at the exact moment you want to leave.

Treat sea conditions and airspace separately

Before swimming, assess the conditions on the day and follow local warnings. Watching aircraft can distract from surf, children and belongings; assign someone to watch the water if your group splits between swimming and plane spotting. Bring sun protection and drinking water, and plan a quieter alternative if the beach feels crowded or uncomfortable.

Leave drones, kites and objects that could interfere with aircraft out of the visit. Sint Maarten’s government launched its Respect the Sky campaign to address safety around the airport and Maho. Check its current rules rather than assuming a small recreational drone is permitted. For accommodation, compare the exact address and noise expectations: a room close to the airport may be convenient, but your sleep preferences still matter.
