Your questions, answered

Is Samaria Gorge open now?

The official NECCA ticket portal, checked on 8 October 2026, says the gorge is closed from both entrances until further notice while inspections are completed. Recheck that portal before arranging a visit. The itinerary below is for planning a future hike once the authority confirms access.

How long is the Samaria Gorge hike?

Visit Greece describes the full Xyloskalo-to-Agia Roumeli route as about 16 km and roughly six hours of walking. Treat that as a planning estimate, allowing for your pace, breaks and the onward boat rather than a guaranteed finishing time.

How difficult is the hike?

The full route is a long walk with a substantial downhill approach and uneven rocky ground. It suits travelers prepared for an extended hiking day. A tour arranges logistics but does not remove the terrain or distance.

Can you visit Samaria Gorge from Chania?

Chania is a useful base to compare for organized or independent journeys to Xyloskalo near Omalos. The full hike finishes at Agia Roumeli, so plan the boat and onward return separately. Current closure applies regardless of the base or booking platform.

Check official Samaria Gorge access before booking

The NECCA ticket portal is the access checkpoint for this guide. On 8 October 2026, its notice states that Samaria Gorge is closed from both entrances until further notice, pending inspections. Do not treat the availability of a future tour listing, an older season calendar or a hotel recommendation as confirmation that the gorge is open.

Plan the route now if it helps choose a future Crete stay, but wait for official access confirmation before committing to a visit that depends on the hike. Opening can depend on conditions and authority decisions. Ask an operator what happens if access is closed on your booked date and read the actual cancellation or alternative-trip terms.

The full hike: Xyloskalo to Agia Roumeli

The Visit Greece description starts the full route at Xyloskalo near Omalos and ends at Agia Roumeli on the south coast. It gives an overall distance of about 16 km and roughly six hours on foot. The well-known narrow section is part of that larger day, not a description of the whole distance from the northern entrance to the boat departure.

Work out whether your group wants and can manage this full route before choosing transport. Factor in the descent, rocky surfaces, breaks and the connection after the walk. Our recommendation is to make it the day's main activity. A deadline for a ferry is a reason to plan conservatively, not to assume that everyone walks at the published estimate.

Plan the ferry and bus before the outward journey

The route is point to point. Finishing at Agia Roumeli does not return you to a parked car at Xyloskalo. Choose the appropriate boat departure and onward land transport for your base, checking their current dates and connections once the gorge reopens. Do not combine independent timetable fragments without checking that the services connect.

For a tour, read which parts are arranged and which are payable separately. The hike's entrance, boat ticket, coach travel and guiding are different components. Confirm the return destination and what happens if a connection changes. If driving, solve the return to your vehicle before choosing the car as your outward transport.

  • Official access confirmation comes first.
  • Identify the start, finish, boat and final return.
  • Check separate entrance, ferry and transport costs.

Guided Samaria Gorge tour or independent hike?

An organized excursion is worth comparing for the early transfer and return arrangements. Check pickup in Chania or your actual resort, the departure time, the support provided during the walk and the inclusions. A product titled Samaria Gorge may allocate separate payments for the park entrance and boat; compare the complete day cost.

Independent travel can suit a prepared walker who is comfortable coordinating the full route and connections. It still requires an authorized open day and the required entrance arrangements. Neither option changes the current closure. The booking links below are for comparing future plans, and a provider must confirm that your intended date can operate.

Prepare for distance, terrain and changing conditions

Ask the park authority and operator about the actual route conditions before you go. Choose footwear suitable for sustained walking on uneven ground and plan water, food and weather protection for the day. Check what support and facilities are currently available rather than relying on an old account of a previous visitor's hike.

A shorter approach from the southern side is a different itinerary and should not be described as the full crossing. Confirm the permitted route, walking demands and boat logistics before choosing it. The notice checked for this guide closes both entrances, so it is not an alternative while that notice remains in force.

Choose a Chania base with room to adjust the hiking day

Chania is our starting accommodation search for travelers organizing the northern approach. Check the exact tour pickup or independent departure point against the hotel address. If leaving early, ask about breakfast, luggage storage and late return arrangements. A property labeled Chania can be beyond an operator's pickup area.

Keep enough flexibility in the Crete stay to handle a closed-access day or a changed transport plan. Our recommendation is to avoid attaching a time-critical flight to the end of the hike. Choose alternative activities for the stay and read cancellation deadlines before reserving accommodation solely around this excursion.

Frequently asked questions

Does an available tour listing mean the gorge is open?

No. Use the official authority's access notice first. A listing may offer future dates or require cancellation or an alternative when the gorge closes.

Is the full hike a loop back to your car?

No. The full route ends at Agia Roumeli. Plan the boat and onward transport, including retrieval of a car if you leave one at the northern start.

Is the shorter southern visit available during this closure?

The official notice checked on 8 October 2026 closes both entrances. Recheck the authority's notice; the southern approach is not a workaround while it remains closed.
