Where should I stay in the Yaeyama Islands?
Our suggested first base is Ishigaki when you want several island day trips. Compare a city or port-area stay for ferry access with a more remote island property for a slower holiday. A scenic coastal room can require extra transport for departures.
How do I reach the other islands?
Ferries leave Ishigaki for islands including Taketomi and Iriomote. Use the operator’s current timetable and operating-status updates. Check the precise arrival port, return sailing and local transport rather than treating every island as one interchangeable day trip.
Can I swim or snorkel at Kabira Bay?
Not from the beach there. Okinawa’s official Ishigaki guide says beach swimming and snorkeling are not permitted at Kabira Bay. Choose a glass-bottom boat experience or a separately permitted snorkeling location; the hero illustration is not a swimming invitation.
How many days should I allow?
Our suggestion is three full days for an Ishigaki day, one other-island visit and one sea activity or flexible day. Add more for an overnight on another island. Leave room around the outbound flight in case conditions affect ferry or boat plans.

Ishigaki as a base or a quieter island stay?
The official Okinawa guide identifies Ishigaki as a gateway with an airport, city and accommodation options. A port-area search is a useful starting choice when several ferry outings matter. Compare the actual walk with luggage and the journey to other activity meetings, not just a property described as Ishigaki.
For a quieter coastal stay, plan the transport it requires before booking. A room far from the ferry terminal can be the right holiday choice, but it changes the early-departure morning. Give Taketomi and Iriomote separate working days
Taketomi is a compact island reached from Ishigaki, while Iriomote has a larger, forest-led setting and different outing possibilities. Choose the place for what you want to do, then compare the ferry and local plan. The same ticket or transport assumption should not be applied to both.
For a Taketomi day, decide how you will move from the port to your selected village or coastal stops. For an Iriomote outing, read the tour meeting point and arrival port carefully. Confirm whether local transport or a guided activity is included rather than expecting the ferry alone to arrange the day.
Check the route, port and final return
Yaeyama Kanko Ferry publishes services and operating updates from Ishigaki to several islands. Use the timetable for the actual travel period; a screenshot from another season is not a current sailing plan. Choose the outbound and workable return before committing to an activity ashore.
Ask the hotel and operator how changes affect luggage, pickup and the next booking. Keep the final return from an island well separated from a flight whenever practical. The plan should remain workable if you need to spend the flexible day on Ishigaki instead of taking another boat.
Choose the sea location rather than the scenic label
Kabira Bay is a place for scenery and permitted boat viewing, not beach swimming or snorkeling. A snorkeling product elsewhere around Ishigaki should name its departure and route. Do not apply a general description of beautiful clear water as permission to enter at any shore.

A three-day plan with one flexible day
Our suggested order is an Ishigaki-focused day, a chosen other-island outing and a sea activity or flexible coastal day. Swap the order around confirmed conditions and bookings. Avoid placing the most departure-dependent outing immediately before the flight just to make a checklist fit.
